Slate, limestone, granite, or sandstone, hearths made from natural stone are exceptionally durable and capable of withstanding the intense, direct heat of open fires and heavy wood-burning stoves. Each stone type brings a different character: limestone offers soft, creamy tones and a smooth finish, while granite provides a nearly indestructible, often polished surface that resists scratching and staining. Slate comes in smooth and riven finishes, smooth for minimalist clean lines or riven with a natural, cleft texture that adds rustic character. Slate while naturally grey is often treated with a slate dressing oil which brings out deep charcoal tones
